🎓WELCOME to Tel Aviv University and its International Community of Researchers🎓

Introduction of the Blog and WA group guidelines

  Welcome to the first TAU international Volunteers-managed blog! This blog has been created to give complementary information to the graduated students of TAU and to create a community where we can share thoughts and information. This blog is not affiliated to any of the TAU services or bureaucratic apparatus and it is meant to be an informal tool where people can be updated, alongside the Whatsapp group and the informal word-of-mouth. Each student or post-doc is more than welcome to approach and participate in the creation of this blog, acting as a volunteer (with a little basic commitment) but also as an user, where they can collect any sort of information. All of the content posted on this blog is under the responsibility of the person who wrote it and posted it. UPDATE 06.11.23  Guidelines for the WhatsApp group  1.Respect & Kindness: Treat all members with respect and kindness. Be mindful of your tone and language.  2. 19.07.23 Meeting with the scholars of the International Community on the next steps to take for the scholarships and rights campaign

Yesterday 19.07.23 three SEGEL representatives (Tuvaal, Elinor, Valentina) met some international scholars (mostly post-doc, but also PhDs). There were 10 people present, among them our team member Bhavana, who is kindly helping and supporting our campaign.

We decided to focus on the following topics:

  • Status of the scholarships and compensations
  • The meeting between the postdocs and the VP of research and development and the VP of the International scholars
  • Next steps to take in order to escalate or progress with the campaign
At first, Tuvaal gave us a summary of the current situation: the various demands have been forwarded to the administration body of the University. In particular, the chairperson of SEGEL (Shachar) has reached out the CEO of the University, presenting three demands:
    • increase of the Master and PhD students scholarships of 12.5% (percentage set according to the current status quo in Israel, resembling the general increase of salaries in the country due to the CPI);
    • increase of the the Postdocs scholarship of 25% (percentage set according to the fact that for several years there was no adjustment of scholarship to the CPI, neither the previous ones);
    • equalization of the Israelis and International postdocs' scholarships, as so far the Israeli postdocs receive less amount of money.
As far as the one-time bonus compensation for the raise of the CPI is regarded, the university is not willing to change its policy and it insists saying that the bonus was calculated correctly and everyone got what they deserved.

A few hours before the meeting, we got an email from Dan Pe'er, the Vice President of the Research and development of TAU. He agreed with meeting a few postdocs representatives, alongside Valentina and Tuvaal. After a brief discussion, we decided to opt for the August the 14th between 13.00 and 17.00, place to be determined. This implicitly means that the meeting will take place after the TAU administration committee has met, lowering our chance to negotiate a deal within their decision period.

Given this situation, we brainstormed a series of initiative to gather more attention and scale up the campaign.

We spoke about preparing a petition (online) to ask for some more support and to collect the opinion of the scholars on how we should proceed further.

At the same time, we are trying to spread out the survey prepared by SEGEL to collect as much data as possible on the national level situation on the University scholarship amounts.

Later on, in the next weeks, there will be some action by which posters will be hung around the university to raise the awareness on the scholarship raise campaign. It was proposed to create English posters and to add some blank space where people can sign to support the action.

Alongside these ideas, we suggested to:
  • create an email with some general text to be sent massively to a specific recipient in TAU administration;
  • call the press and offer a story about how an international scholar lives the university and the city;
  • create social media campaign where we can "attack" the official channels of TAU, or we can open a specific channel where we can report the problems and make demands in a public space;
 Given this situation, we decided to proceed with the petition and to update each other in a few days, to lead and execute these ideas.

For any inquiry, ideas, criticism etc please contact us.

Tips for Housing

Dormitories around the university: Broshim and Einstein NOTE: the company that used to run Milman, Brodetzky and Ra'anana Dorms has sold out its properties, therefore the information you can find on their website can be outdated. Additionally, we have been reported that Brodetzky dorms no longer accept foreign tenants. Broshim enrollment To add your name in the Broshim waiting list:  https://forms.monday.com/forms/8a08dde9b3f31642670c466546e7ee24?r=use1 Please note: there is a waiting list active all over the year and tenant initiatives are not considered, which means no subletting and no swapping of rooms. Only the Housing team can deal with these things. When you need replacement, the TAU housing office will deal with that. Please note: the rental contract requires the tenant to renew the contract every year. If a tenant has to leave before the end of the contract, they need to find a substitution. This is true for ALL of the dorms. You can also contact the TAU office for housi...

The situation in Israel and various links

 Dear all, in these hours we are all experiencing a stressful and uneasy situation, as the prime minister of Israel has declared war on Hamas (and Gaza strip) on 07.10.23. Unfortunately, this conflict might last several days (or more) and many of us decided to leave the country to be safe. The situation keeps changing in any moment, therefore the ones among us who stay here need to be extremely careful. This, on the other hand, doesn't mean that we are segregated in our little rooms or apartments.  The university is open to the researchers and provides a series of  emotional support services, and it has strong shelter in the basement of every building. Therefore, you can still try to get to the uni and give yourself a sense of routine. You might also find your peers. If not, you should not feel guilty for staying at home, it is more than understandable and my personal suggestion is not to be alone, but maybe team up with one or two friends and consider staying together fo...

Latest News on Visa Status (20.09.22)

LAST UPDATE(28.09.22): the visas expiring in this period are automatically elongated till the end of November 2022. This automatic extension DOES NOT entitle the multi entry stamp, which needs to be required via the Visa request form , linked below. Note that the ministry of interior does not accept anymore private appointment scheduling, therefore the appointment must be taken by going through TAU international office. Dear TAU community , We hope this email finds you well. As many of you know, The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently on strike, meaning some Israeli consulates/embassies around the world are not issuing visas, and the Ministry of Interior in Israel is overwhelmed by visa requests. We are aware of the inconvenience this causes our incoming and current students, and we are working hard to try and find solutions to each case. In order to provide support, we are collecting information from our students and scholars, regarding their visa situation. If you are ...
