Entering the Dorms
Whether you are abroad or in Israel and you are a PhD or a Post doc, if your intention is to be close to the university and in a simple accommodation, you might want to consider living in Broshim, the complex or dorms in direct partnership with TAU.
Added note: Master students generally get an accommodation in Einstein, another campus dorm complex. It is not allowed for a PhD student or post doc to live in Einstein.
The first thing to do is to to add your name in the Broshim waiting list, for which you need to contact the housing coordinator.
--> here the official website page from The Lowy International School.
2024 update--> FORM for signing up to the waiting list
Please note: there is a waiting list active all over the year and tenant initiatives are not considered, which means no subletting and no swapping of rooms. When you need replacement, the TAU housing office will deal with that. There are exceptional cases, which will be discriminated by the office.
Please note: the rental contract requires the tenant to renew the contract every year. If a tenant has to leave before the end of the contract, they need to find a substitution. In Einstein and in Broshim the TAU housing office decides who to substitute, according to the waiting list above. Rare exceptions can be made.
Once your name pops up in the first positions of the waiting list, you will be called and offered a random apartment, according to the type of accommodation you chose (single studio, couple studio, family apartment). The answer from you should be given in a matter of days!
At this stage, once you accepted the offer you are required to:
- Show proof of active enrollment in TAU, and possibly a recommendation letter from your PI. Generally, the student secretariat is the one in charge of sending out the proof of enrollment. It is an official document.
- Open a student profile on the TAU International student portal, and upload the picture of your Passport and the acceptance letter you received when you were accepted in a lab (for the newcomers, it is very immediate; for the people already here for a few years, this means to go back to your archive and look for that paper). At this stage, NO payment is required, so you can ignore the "fee balance". Further details will be given to you directly to the TAU Housing office.
- Pay in advance a deposit of 4000 shekels. The TAU Housing office will send you the details of the recipient.
- Fill a form that allows the Broshim dorm company to withdraw from your bank account the monthly rent. This is another paper that you will be given by the TAU Housing office, and that you will need to bring to the bank, which should know what to do. For sure, the branches around the university are used to handle these papers and will promptly do the job.
Once the bureaucracy is done, TAU Housing office will schedule with you an appointment at certain day where you can come, check the assigned apartment and sign the contract. Upon that day, you will be given the Key and the Pass badge. People abroad, at this point, instead of checking in this manner, will find their key at the entrance of the dorm, in the guard office.
When you enter your apartment for the first time, you will be given a paper where to sign every single defect or missing item in the room, so that you acknowledge the condition of the apartment.
Once you got your keys and Badge, you are good to go. The secretaries in the office should give you a copy of the contract. If they don't give you spontaneously the " Refreshing and general guidelines" sheet, ask to have it. It contains supplemental information about the rules and the facilities.
On the day in which you are moving in with your luggage and personal items, you can ask the guard to borrow a cart to carry things to the apartment. They will ask you an ID card (and they will return it to you later) and you phone number, for the time you are using the cart.
Note that the Broshim dorm contracts for research students start on October 1 and end on September 30th of the following year. Entering or exiting before the deadline is possible as long as someone leaves the apartment earlier and someone else takes over immediately the apartment. As said before, this switch is regulated by the TAU Housing office.

Policy on the guests
First of all, check with the Dorm office if your profile is set and possesses all of the credentials (such as a correct phone number and ID/Passport code), and once you are set, you can host your friends by filling up a specific form at THIS link. Save it somewhere for the future, as it will be the same link to use to open a request if you need maintenance services, check out, Permissions, administrative and financial issues.
If you don't have this information at hand, the same link can be found at the entrance of the dorms, attached to the guard office (it is a QR code to be scanned).
WARNING! Once you scan it, note that for some (mysterious) reason, the link they provide is connected to an advertisement website. In order to proceed and get to the real Guest entrance form, you need to click on "Skip this advertisement".
The guests are allowed according to the directives of the Dorm managements. For the time being (June 2023), guests can stay the night for 2 days a month. Daily entrance instead is not subjected to limitations, provided that the guests are not alone in the apartment and they are not abusively using any common facility (i.e. study rooms, gym, laundry, entrance badge). For people who do not respect these (and other) rules, there could be an internal trial with some financial punishment.
Pay attention! For daily entrance (any time till 22.00), the request to be submitted is "Visitor Permits", while for your guest to stay overnight is "Accommodation permits". Remember, you will always need the ID/Passport number of you and your guest, as well as the telephone number of both.

What you need to get/buy
Broshim already offers some furniture in the apartment (bed, chairs, desk, table, kitchenette, shower, cupboards, refrigerator and freezer, etc... but does not provide the personal or the kitchen items, such as bedsheets, cutlery, plates, glasses, pans etc... Better to start with a bunch of things (the basic ones) and then inherit, borrow, buy or get in-any-legal-way the rest. There are always people leaving and donating their things, from clothes to apartment items.
Some suggestions:
- if you are a short person, consider having a stool, as the closet and the kitchen cupboards are very tall.
- reason for a solo-tenant. You don't need more than 2-3 items of a specific object (i.e. towel, cutlery, plates...).
- Around Ramat Aviv area, there are many shops where to buy anything needed. No need to go for big travels.
- In the rooms, it is strictly prohibited to add or change the furniture or put nails on the walls. For this reason, you might consider getting some adhesive or removable hooks, for the bathroom and the kitchen. It is possible to adjust these cloth hangers on the door of the closet, but not really on the doors (they are too thick).
- The apartment is provided with a few sockets, so - unless you need ten thousand electric appliances - you should be happy with them. Otherwise, you can get one of those devices to add up more plugs.
- There is no hood for the vapor of the kitchen, so consider keeping the door or the window a bit open. While the door is easy to keep semi-opened, the window is more complicated as if it is fully opened and it starts swinging, it can be dangerous for your head and the things around its area. Also, the apartment is not provided with a curtain, but it has the shutter instead.

Checkout (some information)
In order to leave the apartment (even on the end of the contract), you need to coordinate with 1) the Housing coordinator in the international office and 2) Broshim secretaries. According to their guidelines, you need to book an appointment for the checkout day, upon which the apartment needs to be in order, clean and ready to go.
On that day, you need to reach the Broshim Office (building B) and get the departure forms and the checklist for the conditions of the apartment. This one needs to be clean, without damages and tide according to the checklist.
Anything that is not in place (for example insufficient cleaning or leaving personal stuff in the apartment) leads to some fines, that you must pay buy using the deposit you submitted when you entered (the 4000 shekels).
One of the maintenance managers will come to your room and will sign one of the papers you were given from the secretaries. He/she will certify that you apartment is good to go.
Once you get the greenlight, you go back to the office and you give back the keys, the chip and the papers that you signed. At that point, you are officially over, and the deposit (if no penalty is issued) will return to you within 2 (working) months from the checkout day.
If you are about to close your bank account, there is the possibility to send the deposit onto another bank account (which could be your home national one).
