Introduction of the Blog and WA group guidelines

Welcome to the first TAU international Volunteers-managed blog! This blog has been created to give complementary information to the graduated students of TAU and to create a community where we can share thoughts and information. This blog is not affiliated to any of the TAU services or bureaucratic apparatus and it is meant to be an informal tool where people can be updated, alongside the Whatsapp group and the informal word-of-mouth. Each student or post-doc is more than welcome to approach and participate in the creation of this blog, acting as a volunteer (with a little basic commitment) but also as an user, where they can collect any sort of information. All of the content posted on this blog is under the responsibility of the person who wrote it and posted it. UPDATE 06.11.23  Guidelines for the WhatsApp group  1.Respect & Kindness: Treat all members with respect and kindness. Be mindful of your tone and language.  2. How to Navigate SEGEL /TRFO Website

From the website

The organization of the teaching and research faculty at Tel Aviv University was established with the aim of representing young researchers, practitioners, as well as lecturers without tenure. This is in order to ensure fair teaching and research conditions (as well as benefit from collective insurance and consumer power).

The organization includes male and female fellows, as well as teaching staff at the university who do not have a senior position: teaching assistant (master's and bachelor's degree students), assistant and instructor (doctoral students), teaching associate, teacher from abroad, as well as faculty in the track the equivalent The organization represents these populations and has signed collective agreements regarding them.

As you know, everyone is entitled to have rights and representation in the job environment. Unfortunately, in a foreign country, it is a big challenge to get to know your right, although you are granted them! Don't be shy and look forward, you are in the right place to defend your rights and dignity!

Here we present a brief guide on the SEGEL (in English Teaching and Research Faculty Organization -TRFO) website, still in the majority of its extent in Hebrew. The pages are being updated slowly, but we figured out that the information in the website is easily translated in English, if you ask your browser to do so.

Therefore, once you enter SEGEL website, you can definitely see the translate information. Just click on this link and then on the half of the circle that is translated with "Malagasy". Further, on the right, there is the news column on the activity of the Union (Updates).

If you want to get directly to the English section for the scholarship recipients, click on this link.

If you need some more information from the secretariat of the Union, you can check the CONTACT webpage, where you are provided with different channels. Additionally, you can write directly to gizbar@segel.org.il or segel@segel.org.il. Up to date, these two addresses are the most active ones.

If you also need some more advice or a face-to-face talk, remember there is a list of people who were elected as Representatives of SEGEL:

Scholarship Rights and Benefits (from the official booklet 2022-2023)

Scholarships are not considered as employment income, and therefore, the social rights granted to employed individuals by law do not apply to scholarship recipients. Due to this, male and female scholarship recipients have a distinct "Rights and Benefits Package."

The "Segel" Teaching and Research Staff Organization at Tel Aviv University, which represents scholarship recipients, is available to provide advice and representation at all times regarding the implementation of your rights.

If your research or income has been affected due to the COVID-19 crisis, please contact us.

The monthly amount of a maintenance scholarship can vary from approximately 600 to 11,000 NIS.

The scholarship amount is determined based on the academic stage of the scholarship recipient's studies and the funding source, subject to various regulatory limitations as detailed below.

Scholarship recipients are exempt from paying tuition fees in every semester in which they receive a scholarship.

The exemption does not cover incidental payments (security and welfare), but those employed by the university are exempt from security fees according to the employment terms and position scope.

Scholarship recipients are covered by "Harel" health insurance (basic policy) and life insurance, as well as by "Risk" and A.K.H. insurance from "Migdal," at no cost. To opt out of these insurances, please contact the organization. [this is not for foreigners]

Scholarship recipients are not entitled to pension deposits by the employer (as a scholarship is not considered employment income). However, scholarship recipients interested in pension savings can benefit from the same terms applicable to employees under the organization's group policies.[this is not for foreigners]

Doctoral scholarship recipients are eligible for a $1,000 grant to fund their participation in academic events, whether in Israel or abroad (half funded by the department and half by the university).

Employed doctoral students (research and teaching assistants) are entitled to funding for academic activity both in Israel and abroad through the "Keren Kesheri Mada" foundation.

Third-degree students are provided with a "Doctoral Fellowship" to purchase books and organize scientific conferences by doctoral students.

Upon completion of the doctoral thesis, scholarship recipients and/or employed individuals are entitled to a discount on thesis printing.

Scholarship recipients are entitled to continue receiving the scholarship during maternity leave and reserve duty. Due to these events, there is a provision for extending the scholarship at the end of the absence period (matching the duration of absence).

Scholarships are not considered employment income, thus scholarship recipients are not required to pay income tax and are not eligible for unemployment benefits. However, it is possible to receive unemployment benefits while receiving a scholarship.

Scholarship recipients are entitled to benefits available to all organization members, including representation and support against university entities, legal counseling in relevant fields, annual holiday gift cards, and discounted meal tickets for cafeterias across campus.

As part of the organization's commitment to promoting gender equality on campus and beyond, we actively work to create a safe campus environment free from sexual harassment, including providing information about sexual harassment and ways to address it.

Tips for Housing

Dormitories around the university: Broshim and Einstein NOTE: the company that used to run Milman, Brodetzky and Ra'anana Dorms has sold out its properties, therefore the information you can find on their website can be outdated. Additionally, we have been reported that Brodetzky dorms no longer accept foreign tenants. Broshim enrollment To add your name in the Broshim waiting list:  https://forms.monday.com/forms/8a08dde9b3f31642670c466546e7ee24?r=use1 Please note: there is a waiting list active all over the year and tenant initiatives are not considered, which means no subletting and no swapping of rooms. Only the Housing team can deal with these things. When you need replacement, the TAU housing office will deal with that. Please note: the rental contract requires the tenant to renew the contract every year. If a tenant has to leave before the end of the contract, they need to find a substitution. This is true for ALL of the dorms. You can also contact the TAU office for housi...

The situation in Israel and various links

Dear all, in these hours we are all experiencing a stressful and uneasy situation, as the prime minister of Israel has declared war on Hamas (and Gaza strip) on 07.10.23. Unfortunately, this conflict might last several days (or more) and many of us decided to leave the country to be safe. The situation keeps changing in any moment, therefore the ones among us who stay here need to be extremely careful. This, on the other hand, doesn't mean that we are segregated in our little rooms or apartments.  The university is open to the researchers and provides a series of  emotional support services, and it has strong shelter in the basement of every building. Therefore, you can still try to get to the uni and give yourself a sense of routine. You might also find your peers. If not, you should not feel guilty for staying at home, it is more than understandable and my personal suggestion is not to be alone, but maybe team up with one or two friends and consider staying together fo...

LAST UPDATE(28.09.22): the visas expiring in this period are automatically elongated till the end of November 2022. This automatic extension DOES NOT entitle the multi entry stamp, which needs to be required via the Visa request form , linked below. Note that the ministry of interior does not accept anymore private appointment scheduling, therefore the appointment must be taken by going through TAU international office. Dear TAU community , We hope this email finds you well. As many of you know, The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently on strike, meaning some Israeli consulates/embassies around the world are not issuing visas, and the Ministry of Interior in Israel is overwhelmed by visa requests. We are aware of the inconvenience this causes our incoming and current students, and we are working hard to try and find solutions to each case. In order to provide support, we are collecting information from our students and scholars, regarding their visa situation. If you are ...
