🎓WELCOME to Tel Aviv University and its International Community of Researchers🎓

Introduction of the Blog and WA group guidelines

Welcome to the first TAU international Volunteers-managed blog! This blog has been created to give complementary information to the graduated students of TAU and to create a community where we can share thoughts and information. This blog is not affiliated to any of the TAU services or bureaucratic apparatus and it is meant to be an informal tool where people can be updated, alongside the Whatsapp group and the informal word-of-mouth. Each student or post-doc is more than welcome to approach and participate in the creation of this blog, acting as a volunteer (with a little basic commitment) but also as an user, where they can collect any sort of information. All of the content posted on this blog is under the responsibility of the person who wrote it and posted it. UPDATE 06.11.23  Guidelines for the WhatsApp group  1.Respect & Kindness: Treat all members with respect and kindness. Be mindful of your tone and language.  2. Stay On Topic: Keep discussions releva...

Weapon number one: we want the raise in the scholarship and we want it now! Blast of emails

From the SEGEL TRFO organization (mail sent on 02.08.23)

Hello,

At the end of June this year the organization sent a demand to the Director General of the University to increase scholarships by 12.5% in the upcoming academic year for all recipients, except postdoctoral fellows for whom we demanded more. This, in accordance with the increase of the average salary between 2021-2023, and taking into account that 2021 was the last year in which scholarships were updated according to the Consumer Price Index, which continues to rise.

For Postdoctoral fellows who have not received any compensation, and whose scholarships remained stagnant for several years, the organization demanded a double raise of 25% as well as raising of the minimal scholarships level to 200% (which is currently 100% for Israeli postdocs and 150% for international postdocs). A full postdoctoral scholarship for researchers with a PhD currently amounts to only 5,723 ILS per month, which is slightly above the minimum wage but with no social benefits.

The University is supposed to decide about increasing the scholarships this week. Our experience during the past year has shown that without organized pressure on our part the odds that management will act in our favor are low.

Help us influence that decision and enter this link (CHECK BELOW ON THE UPDATE) to send a pre-prepared mail to management.

Yours,
The Teaching and Research Faculty Organization

Brief explanation of the context of this email

You should have received such email in your mailbox, from SEGEL/TRFO, the "labor union" of the scholars (i.e. students and postdocs who receive a scholarship).

Previously, thanks to your opinions and support, we managed to design some strategies to put some pressure on the administration of TAU regarding the raise of the scholarship.

This raise is important for all of us in order to cope with the rampant increasing of the CPI(Consumer price index) and the inflation, alongside the fact that we live in one of the most expensive cities in the world. The university previously promised the 5% increase, which is actually not enough considering the current situation. We are pushing for the +12.5% for all of the students, so that we can cover the inflation costs. This is actually hard to achieve if the demands are shy. Therefore, we decided to take action with different initiatives.

The actions we are launching are:
  • Social media campaign
  • collection of testimony from people in the international community
  • Collaboration with the local press
  • Physical protest on the campus
  • massive emailing towards TAU administration
The first project ongoing is the massive emailing towards TAU administration, which is exactly the content of the email from SEGEL.

If you are willing to help, please click on the link above (highlighted in yellow) to send a pre-written letter to the recipients. Your email will be one of the many that the administration will receive in these days. Thanks to SEGEL initiative, the email campaign is supported also by the Israeli scholars of TAU and we expect that hundreds of people will email the administration.

Big numbers are also a protection for which everybody participating in this action is protected against any reaction (i.e. these people don't have time and interest in checking on the email and personal details of hundreds of people, and there is still SEGEL to take responsibilities for this action).

Anyway, if you don't feel like doing it, you can still participate in other activities we are preparing in the next days. Some of them have a higher privacy level, if you are concerned.

Please, text me or Bhavana to get further information and try to support our action also by sharing this initiative!

we were reported that the recipients of the email have blocked the contents and the senders of it, as long as the email was sent with the @mail.tau.ac.il domain. To tackle this issue, you can use another address with another domain instead.

Tips for Housing

Dormitories around the university: Broshim and Einstein NOTE: the company that used to run Milman, Brodetzky and Ra'anana Dorms has sold out its properties, therefore the information you can find on their website can be outdated. Additionally, we have been reported that Brodetzky dorms no longer accept foreign tenants. Broshim enrollment To add your name in the Broshim waiting list:  https://forms.monday.com/forms/8a08dde9b3f31642670c466546e7ee24?r=use1 Please note: there is a waiting list active all over the year and tenant initiatives are not considered, which means no subletting and no swapping of rooms. Only the Housing team can deal with these things. When you need replacement, the TAU housing office will deal with that. Please note: the rental contract requires the tenant to renew the contract every year. If a tenant has to leave before the end of the contract, they need to find a substitution. This is true for ALL of the dorms. You can also contact the TAU office for housi...

The situation in Israel and various links

Dear all, in these hours we are all experiencing a stressful and uneasy situation, as the prime minister of Israel has declared war on Hamas (and Gaza strip) on 07.10.23. Unfortunately, this conflict might last several days (or more) and many of us decided to leave the country to be safe. The situation keeps changing in any moment, therefore the ones among us who stay here need to be extremely careful. This, on the other hand, doesn't mean that we are segregated in our little rooms or apartments.  The university is open to the researchers and provides a series of  emotional support services, and it has strong shelter in the basement of every building. Therefore, you can still try to get to the uni and give yourself a sense of routine. You might also find your peers. If not, you should not feel guilty for staying at home, it is more than understandable and my personal suggestion is not to be alone, but maybe team up with one or two friends and consider staying together fo...

Latest News on Visa Status (20.09.22)

LAST UPDATE(28.09.22): the visas expiring in this period are automatically elongated till the end of November 2022. This automatic extension DOES NOT entitle the multi entry stamp, which needs to be required via the Visa request form , linked below. Note that the ministry of interior does not accept anymore private appointment scheduling, therefore the appointment must be taken by going through TAU international office. Dear TAU community , We hope this email finds you well. As many of you know, The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently on strike, meaning some Israeli consulates/embassies around the world are not issuing visas, and the Ministry of Interior in Israel is overwhelmed by visa requests. We are aware of the inconvenience this causes our incoming and current students, and we are working hard to try and find solutions to each case. In order to provide support, we are collecting information from our students and scholars, regarding their visa situation. If you are ...
