🎓WELCOME to Tel Aviv University and its International Community of Researchers🎓

Introduction of the Blog and WA group guidelines

Welcome to the first TAU international Volunteers-managed blog! This blog has been created to give complementary information to the graduated students of TAU and to create a community where we can share thoughts and information. This blog is not affiliated to any of the TAU services or bureaucratic apparatus and it is meant to be an informal tool where people can be updated, alongside the Whatsapp group and the informal word-of-mouth. Each student or post-doc is more than welcome to approach and participate in the creation of this blog, acting as a volunteer (with a little basic commitment) but also as an user, where they can collect any sort of information. All of the content posted on this blog is under the responsibility of the person who wrote it and posted it. UPDATE 06.11.23  Guidelines for the WhatsApp group  1.Respect & Kindness: Treat all members with respect and kindness. Be mindful of your tone and language.  2. Stay On Topic: Keep discussions releva...

Hot topics of the last week: let's break them down

Segel, the scholarships and the new representatives On June 22nd Segel held the annual assembly in order to check out the past annual management and activities, but also to elect various representatives (possibly one per each faculty) who will deal with the incoming Segel activities. This is important, so that there are people who can represent us as Scholars and assure our freedom and dignity inside the academia. Among the many (I will update this info once there will be official statements), Elinor and Valentina have been elected. This is positive for the international community and the campaign that the post docs are carrying on to obtain more visibility from the university. Later on,  there was a discussion on the demand to raise the subsistence scholarships by more than 5%, since inflation is continuing to grow. In fact, previously, TAU proposed to raise the scholarships of all the TAU Scholars (Post-Docs included) of 5%. Unfortunately, the CPI is still increasing and so...

Taxes that Master and PhD students are supposed to pay

For each student who subscribes in TAU, a series of fees are required. Obviously, the Tuition Fees are mandatory to be enrolled in the student career and they depend on the prices established by the university. Other than the Tuition Fees, TAU requires to pay the so called Ancillary Fees, which are the Security Tax to cover you in case you have an accident in the university and the Welfare tax (Social services fee), which includes a small contribution to the Student Union. The research students such as the PhDs, as scholars provided with the scholarships, are exempted from the tuition fees, but they must pay the ancillary fees. Actually, whenever it comes to the welfare tax, it is possible to renounce its benefits and avoid paying it, by using a waiver form to be filled out during the summer, before the next academic year starts (the deadline is generally somewhere in September). The form to be used is at this LINK . This means that by submitting this form in time, one is able to pay ...

Segel representative election: we need your vote!

Good afternoon everyone!  As we are in a complex time in relation to the continued attacks of the government, including on academia, and the rising cost of living crisis, this is an important opportunity for you all to affect the policies and activities of the union for the coming year.   As far as the scholarships are concerned, at the end of the assembly we will have a discussion about what demands we should place towards the university.  The cost of living is still rising and inflation is expected to reach nearly 10% by the beginning of next year -  since the last time the scholarships were raised.  The university has so far promised only a 5% raise, which is in effect a decrease in all of our scholarships.  We need to fight for raises for everyone, especially as scholarships are far too low for many people already.   Therefore, we need some help from you!  What can you do? Tomorrow at  10 in the Dan David 110 Room , we will meet...

Guidelines and Various information about Living in Broshim (Campus dorms)

Entering the Dorms Whether you are abroad or in Israel and you are a PhD or a Post doc, if your intention is to be close to the university and in a simple accommodation, you might want to consider living in Broshim, the complex or dorms in direct partnership with TAU.      Added note: Master students generally get an accommodation in Einstein, another campus dorm complex.  It is not allowed for a PhD student or post doc to live in Einstein. The first thing to do is to to add your name in the Broshim waiting list, for which you need to contact the housing coordinator. --> here the official website page from The Lowy International School . 2024 update--> FORM for signing up to the waiting list Please note:  there is a waiting list active all over the year and tenant initiatives are not considered, which means no subletting and no swapping of rooms. When you need replacement, the TAU housing office will deal with that. There are exceptional cases, which will...

It is the moment to establish the "Tenants' committee" for a better life in the dorms

In these days, we received an invitation (with the words below) via social media to join a project called Tenants' committee "If you too are tired of the unacceptable treatment from the dorm management, the intrusion of privacy, the restrictions on guests, the complete indifference, and their racism, then you should join us tonight for the first tenant’s meeting. In which we can all share our frustrations with the way the dorms are being run and start working together to change it! We must stand together if we want to make a real difference 💪🏼💪🏾💪🏿 " The Tenants' committee is a group of representatives of the people living in the dorms (TAU and outside) self-elected as members. The idea of becoming part of the committee is to act as a social person who highlights the problems within the dorms and takes action to improve the life conditions of all of their inhabitants. The first meeting was an introduction to what is the purpo...

The Dentistry Services in the School of Dentristry in TAU. An opportunity for us to get treated!

The Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine offers dental treatment services to everybody, included the Internationals in TAU. Their service is professional and high standard (possibly the best dentist clinic in Israel), where the 5th and 6th year students of Dentistry get trained under the strict supervision of the Doctors and Professors of the discipline. This means that you will be their "guinea pig", but don't get scared! It's a very appreciable service at an interesting prices. In particular for us, because we as Students are entitled to get interesting discounts. You need to show your certificate of enrollment (typically the one that you can download from myTAU). This is definitely a good opportunity for all of us on campus: the clinic is situated in the building you see circled in light blue.   To book an appointment, it is necessary to talk to Judit, the secretary (first row of the table in the link). She might not answer in English, so in...

After the Focus Group for PhD and Postdocs: researchers prefer welfare and smoother bureaucracy over trips and pizza nights

Today there was a focus group on the campus life of the scholars, in particular PhD and Post doc ones. The meeting was held by Zofnat Institute , an institute for research and consulting organizations. Two researchers came to the university to meet us and ask our opinion about the Student Life Team, made up by madrichim belonging to TAU international office. The intention of the meeting was to inquiry the social/amusement/leisure experience of the International students and scholars, but soon the meeting turned into a vibrant discussion about the various bureaucratic and institutional issues, perceived by all of the participants (and the shocked researchers) as an effort "to survive" the student life. Most of the participants were PhD students, with a minority of Post doc, always too little to be represented (Alas!). The general sentiment was of frustration and disappointment on a hand, but passion and interest on the other! People are in general in love with their studies an...
