🎓WELCOME to Tel Aviv University and its International Community of Researchers🎓

Introduction of the Blog and WA group guidelines

Welcome to the first TAU international Volunteers-managed blog! This blog has been created to give complementary information to the graduated students of TAU and to create a community where we can share thoughts and information. This blog is not affiliated to any of the TAU services or bureaucratic apparatus and it is meant to be an informal tool where people can be updated, alongside the Whatsapp group and the informal word-of-mouth. Each student or post-doc is more than welcome to approach and participate in the creation of this blog, acting as a volunteer (with a little basic commitment) but also as an user, where they can collect any sort of information. All of the content posted on this blog is under the responsibility of the person who wrote it and posted it. UPDATE 06.11.23  Guidelines for the WhatsApp group  1.Respect & Kindness: Treat all members with respect and kindness. Be mindful of your tone and language.  2. A reminder of the policy to enter the TAU Intl. PhDs&Postdocs WA group

given the situation (yes, I mean the war and its consequences), given some previous episodes and the few but constant frauds we are hearing on the newspapers about fake profiles to lure people and soldiers to expose their personal data, we decided to enforce some strict rules on the WA group to protect the privacy and the virtual safety of our members.

  • As part of the International Researcher TAU Whatsapp Community, the access to the group is no longer automatic, but each invitee needs to be accepted by the admins.
  • Each person who wants to enter the group needs a simple proof of them being real people affiliated with TAU. Therefore, we ask them to provide their name, the department in which they work and possibly their PI name.
  •  When requesting to add someone please include their name, department and phone number for security reasons.

Broshim Dorms management issued a warning for the tenants. Given various misbehaviors of a group of tenants, the management went out with this email on 16.01.24.

Dear Tenants,
Here are some highlights of the dorm guidelines:

  • Guest entry and accommodation permits : The approval is contingent on the tenant's commitment to be present in the apartment at the time of accommodation.
  • Visitors permit- Is intended to accommodate the tenant's guest only for several hours. This permit does not replace the sleeping over permit (accommodation permit). Note, a visitor can only enter the dorms until 10: 0 0 p.m. There is no option to open a visitor permit call between 10: 0 0pm-07:00am.
  • Guests who arrive at the dormitories on a daily basis will be checked individually. If we will find an anomaly, these guests will not be allowed to enter the dorm complex.
  • In roommate apartments, the overnight accommodation is conditional to the consent of the other roommate.
  • Each guest who enters the complex, is obliged to present the guard with an ID card, student ID, license or a passport. It will not be possible to present one of these documents on your mobile phone, so please be sure to avoid unpleasantness.
  • It is strictly forbidden to open an application in the tenants' application system to various couriers such as Ten Bis, wolt etc, excluding supermarket shipments.
  • Sublease ban: recently, a number of tenants were caught deciding to move their apartment to a sub-tenant, this is contrary to the dormitory regulations under Section 42.
  • A tenant caught transferring the apartment to another person, will immediately lose his eligibility to live in the dormitories and vacate his apartment within 7 days. In addition, the tenant is subject to a hefty fine and his continued disciplinary treatment is transferred to the university's disciplinary committee.
  • Smoking : Recently, the number of complaints about tenants smoking in apartments and in this complex has increased, this is a violation of the regulations. There have also been complaints about cigarette butts and trash throwing. We emphasize again, that smoking in apartments and/or public spaces in the building is prohibited by a severe prohibition. Tenants caught, will immediately be summoned for a disciplinary hearing. Please, do not smoke near the residential buildings.
  • Smoke detector: Smoke detectors are installed in every room in the apartments and public areas. In case of fire or massive smoke exhaust, the detector system will be activated and sirens and warning lights will be activated.
  • An automated water extinguishing system is specifically activated at the scene and extinguishes the fire with a water target. Please note that it is strictly forbidden to cover the detectors in the ceiling! Covering the smoke detector prevents the detection of the fire and this action poses a risk to human life
  • Bicycles/scooters: It is highly recommended to lock the bike or scooter tightly and not by tying under the seat, in which the thief lifts the seat and releases the lock. Please, do not leave batteries in the bike.
  • Tenants who charge batteries or scooters in the apartment, Do not leave a charged battery in the apartment unattended - This is dangerous.
  • Garbage : We would like to remind you, it is forbidden to take out garbage to public areas (such as corridors).
  • Removing private objects : It is forbidden to take out / store personal belongings in the hallways and entrances.
  • Please make sure that no objects are placed on the windowsill or balconies - This is very dangerous.
  • Many resources have been invested in the study spaces - Please take care and keep the equipment. Eating and drinking in classrooms is prohibited.

Tips for Housing

Dormitories around the university: Broshim and Einstein NOTE: the company that used to run Milman, Brodetzky and Ra'anana Dorms has sold out its properties, therefore the information you can find on their website can be outdated. Additionally, we have been reported that Brodetzky dorms no longer accept foreign tenants. Broshim enrollment To add your name in the Broshim waiting list:  https://forms.monday.com/forms/8a08dde9b3f31642670c466546e7ee24?r=use1 Please note: there is a waiting list active all over the year and tenant initiatives are not considered, which means no subletting and no swapping of rooms. Only the Housing team can deal with these things. When you need replacement, the TAU housing office will deal with that. Please note: the rental contract requires the tenant to renew the contract every year. If a tenant has to leave before the end of the contract, they need to find a substitution. This is true for ALL of the dorms. You can also contact the TAU office for housi...

The situation in Israel and various links

Dear all, in these hours we are all experiencing a stressful and uneasy situation, as the prime minister of Israel has declared war on Hamas (and Gaza strip) on 07.10.23. Unfortunately, this conflict might last several days (or more) and many of us decided to leave the country to be safe. The situation keeps changing in any moment, therefore the ones among us who stay here need to be extremely careful. This, on the other hand, doesn't mean that we are segregated in our little rooms or apartments.  The university is open to the researchers and provides a series of  emotional support services, and it has strong shelter in the basement of every building. Therefore, you can still try to get to the uni and give yourself a sense of routine. You might also find your peers. If not, you should not feel guilty for staying at home, it is more than understandable and my personal suggestion is not to be alone, but maybe team up with one or two friends and consider staying together fo...

Latest News on Visa Status (20.09.22)

LAST UPDATE(28.09.22): the visas expiring in this period are automatically elongated till the end of November 2022. This automatic extension DOES NOT entitle the multi entry stamp, which needs to be required via the Visa request form , linked below. Note that the ministry of interior does not accept anymore private appointment scheduling, therefore the appointment must be taken by going through TAU international office. Dear TAU community , We hope this email finds you well. As many of you know, The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently on strike, meaning some Israeli consulates/embassies around the world are not issuing visas, and the Ministry of Interior in Israel is overwhelmed by visa requests. We are aware of the inconvenience this causes our incoming and current students, and we are working hard to try and find solutions to each case. In order to provide support, we are collecting information from our students and scholars, regarding their visa situation. If you are ...
